Fairy Meadows lies at 3,300 metres in the Rakhiot valley of Diamer District. It is reached by a 15-kilometre jeep track from Raikot Bridge on the Karakoram Highway to Tato village, followed by a five-kilometre walk through pine forest.

The name is credited to the Austrian climber Hermann Buhl in 1953. The meadow is the gateway to Nanga Parbat's Rakhiot face: grass, wooden cabins and dark conifers in front, and an 8,126-metre mountain filling the sky behind.

Planning a visit

Getting there: From Raikot Bridge on the Karakoram Highway, local jeeps climb a 15 km track to Tato village; private vehicles are not allowed on it. From Tato it is a walk of about 5 km, three to four hours uphill. The nearest airport is Gilgit, with weather-dependent flights from Islamabad.
How long to allow: Two to three nights.
Good to know: The meadows lie at about 3,300 metres and are effectively a summer destination. The jeep track is narrow and exposed, and everything you need is carried up from Tato.
