Nanga Parbat rises to 8,126 metres at the western end of the Himalaya, west-southwest of Astore. It is the world's ninth-highest peak and one of the most visually dominant: it stands alone, with no comparable neighbour.

Its southern side, the Rupal Face, is among the greatest mountain walls on Earth and was first climbed in 1970 by Reinhold and Günther Messner. Trekkers approach from three sides: Fairy Meadows to the north, the Rupal valley to the south and Diamir to the west.

Planning a visit

Getting there: There are two approaches. The Raikot face is reached through Fairy Meadows, from Raikot Bridge on the Karakoram Highway. The Rupal face is reached through Astore, about 120 km and three to four hours by road from Gilgit. The nearest airport is Gilgit.
How long to allow: Three to four days, including the walk from Fairy Meadows towards base camp.
Good to know: The base-camp viewpoints are high-altitude walks, so hire a local guide and allow time to acclimatise. Climbing the mountain itself requires a mountaineering permit and a liaison officer.
