Taxila was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1980. It is not one ruin but many: a Mesolithic cave, four successive settlement sites, Buddhist monasteries and stupas, and a later mosque and madrassa.

The city stood at the junction of three ancient trade routes, about 35 kilometres north-west of Rawalpindi, and flourished between the first and fifth centuries. Dharmarajika and Jaulian are among the most complete monastic sites.

Planning a visit

Getting there: Taxila is about 30 to 35 km north-west of Islamabad and Rawalpindi, just off the Grand Trunk Road and under an hour by car. Islamabad International is the nearest airport.
How long to allow: Half a day to a full day, as a trip from Islamabad.
Good to know: One ticket, with a separate rate for foreign visitors, covers the museum and the archaeological sites. The museum closes on the first Monday of each month and on Islamic holidays, and opening hours are shorter in winter.
