K2 stands on the Pakistan–China border in the Karakoram, 8,611 metres of rock and ice in a near-perfect pyramid. It was first climbed on 31 July 1954 by Achille Compagnoni and Lino Lacedelli.

Most visitors come not to climb but to see it. The route runs from Skardu through Shigar and Askole, then for days over the Baltoro Glacier to Concordia, where K2, Broad Peak and the Gasherbrums stand around a single junction of ice. The mountain lies within Central Karakoram National Park.

Planning a visit

Getting there: Fly from Islamabad to Skardu, a flight that depends on the weather; operators drive instead when it is cancelled. From Skardu a jeep road runs through Shigar to Askole, where the walk up the Baltoro Glacier begins.
How long to allow: About two weeks of trekking from Askole to Concordia and base camp and back, or around three weeks from Islamabad with contingency days.
Good to know: The Baltoro is a restricted zone. Foreign trekkers need a trekking permit arranged through a licensed Pakistani tour operator, and a licensed guide; apply weeks ahead. Trekking and national park fees apply, so confirm current amounts with your operator. The route goes above 5,000 metres: acclimatisation and evacuation insurance are essential.
