Chitral town sits on the Kunar River beneath Tirich Mir, at 7,690 metres the highest peak of the Hindu Kush. To the south-west lie Bumburet, Rumbur and Birir, the valleys of the Kalasha people, with their stepped timber-and-stone houses, walnut groves and seasonal festivals.

Kalasha culture is a living one, not a performance. In 2018 UNESCO inscribed Suri Jagek, the Kalasha practice of reading the sun, moon and stars against the local skyline, on its List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding. Visitors are guests in a community, and the best experiences here are the ones the community itself leads.
