Chitral town sits on the Kunar River beneath Tirich Mir, at 7,690 metres the highest peak of the Hindu Kush. To the south-west lie Bumburet, Rumbur and Birir, the valleys of the Kalasha people, with their stepped timber-and-stone houses, walnut groves and seasonal festivals.

Kalasha culture is a living one, not a performance. In 2018 UNESCO inscribed Suri Jagek, the Kalasha practice of reading the sun, moon and stars against the local skyline, on its List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding. Visitors are guests in a community, and the best experiences here are the ones the community itself leads.

Planning a visit

Getting there: Chitral Airport has a limited, weather-dependent service from Islamabad. The all-season road runs through Dir and the Lowari Tunnel and takes a long day from Islamabad. The Kalash valleys are one to two hours by jeep from Chitral town through Ayun.
How long to allow: Three to five days, with one or two nights in the valleys.
Good to know: Foreign visitors show their passport at checkposts and pay a small entry fee at the valley gate. A zone along the Afghan border is closed to foreigners. Ask before photographing people. Several governments currently advise against travel here, so check your own government's advice and your insurance before booking.
